When contemplating the protection of our home and family, it is important to consider the responsibility of firearm use in relation to your house and your neighbors’.
Begin by making a plan and putting it into practice to ensure everyone is familiar with actions they need to take during a break-in, or any unexpected violence in the h0me.
Every consideration must be made for the safety of family members in the house and that means thinking about
1. Instruct children , and practice, that if they hear breaking glass, gun shots or screams during the night, they are to roll out of bed and lie flat on the floor beside their bed or crawl under the bed if they can fit. Under no circumstances are they to run to your bedroom. *This will ensure children do not run into the line of gun fire, nor are situated with a perpetrator between you and them.
2. Practice grabbing your weapon and aiming to fire toward the window or door where perpetrator may enter. During practice, consider where the bullet may travel. If shooting toward a window, will your bullet travel into a neighboring house if you miss the target? If shooting toward a door, will your bullet travel into cars going by? Is there a road close by? Will your bullet penetrate the walls of your house?
3. It is vital you are practiced at firing your weapon and hitting your target. Time to aim before shooting may be short, so make every effort to be on target. You might want to consider adding a laser to your weapon to assist with accuracy.
4. Consider and make available a place to keep your weapon handy in whatever room you and your family are in. Keeping the weapon in the bedroom while your family is in the living room may put you in danger if the perpetrator comes through the door. There are a variety of holsters available for inside the pocket and pant, or outside on a belt if you decide to keep it on you. If you choose a place, make sure it is not accessible to children.
